These are only a few of the many questions people find answered when they come to Unity. It is our privilege to help you broaden your perspective as you seek to walk the spiritual path on more practical, positive, enlightened feet!

Is Unity a denomination?

Some aspects of the Unity movement are denominational and some are not. For example, there are more than 800 Unity churches and study groups affiliated with Unity World Headquarters’ sister organization, Unity Worldwide Ministries. (This is a denominational aspect of Unity). In addition, the Unity Institute at Unity Village trains approximately 60 students every three years to be Unity ministers. (This is also denominational). However, the majority of the work done by Unity at Unity Village involves prayer, healing, publishing, and education services to people of all faiths. These nondenominational aspects include the oldest 24-7; 36 prayer ministry in the world, Silent Unity, publisher of the Daily Word (Unity’s nondenominational inspirational monthly magazine), it also includes retreats, and continuing education classes that are open to everyone and teach Unity principles in nondenominational settings.

Does Unity believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ?

Yes, Unity teaches that the spirit of God lived in human form as Jesus, just as it lives as every person. Every person has the potential to express his/her innate divinity, as Jesus did, by being more Christ-like in everyday life. Jesus Christ is the man who understood His divine nature, who fully actualized His divine potential, and who completely aligned his human self with his Christ Self.

Is there any connection between Unity, Unitarianism, and Christian Science?

No, there is no organizational connection. Many New Thought groups, including Unity, had their beginnings in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Each is a distinct organization with its own set of beliefs and practices.

What is the relationship of Unity to other churches?

Unity is a vehicle for instruction, inspiration, prayer, and healing support for spiritual seekers, regardless of their religious affiliation. Unity freely shares its teachings with all faith traditions. We consider ourselves to be spiritual life centers and not so much dogmatic ‘churchy’ organizations.

What does Unity teach about sin and salvation, heaven and hell?

Sin is actually an archery term that means “missing the mark.” So we miss the mark when we are separated from our divine nature. Salvation is now–not something that occurs after death. We are saved whenever we turn our thoughts from fear, anxiety, worry, and doubt to thoughts of love, harmony, joy, and peace. The “fall” takes place in consciousness whenever we fall into negative habits of thinking. Heaven and hell are states of consciousness, not celestial or other-worldly geographical locations. We make our own heaven or hell here and now by our thoughts, words, and actions.

What do you teach about God?

God is the Eternal Presence, the One Reality, the Universal Source of all that is manifest and unmanifest. God is Love. God is not a person but a Universal Principle which is absolute good expressed in all creation. God is individualized as each person and is our Indwelling Life, God is Omnipresence, Omnipotence, Omniscience, Omniactivity. God is the Ground of all being and nonbeing. We do not believe that God is a white-bearded, white robed anthropomorphic deity in the sky who punishes ‘sinners’ and rewards the obedient.

Is Unity headquarters open to the public?

Yes. All our services in the Unity Village Chapel, along with the surrounding grounds, are open to the public. The grounds at Unity headquarters include a rose garden, a labyrinth for a walking meditation, a metaphysical library, and a bookstore that has a Starbucks Café, and a conference retreat center.

What is the role of the Bible in Unity?

The Bible is Unity’s fundamental textbook. Unity founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore studied the Bible as history and allegory and interpreted it as a metaphysical representation of humankind’s evolutionary journey toward spiritual awakening. In addition, Unity recognizes that the Bible is a complex collection of writings compiled over many centuries. We honor the writings as reflecting the understanding and inspiration of the writers at the time they were written. The Bible continues to be a valuable spiritual resource for us. The Bible’s literal interpretation comes alive when it is understood, from a metaphysical perspective which amplifies its richness as a guide for today’s experiences. As the best-selling book in history, virtually everyone who has read it has an opinion. Some argue for the inerrancy of the Bible, stating that it is God’s Word and should absolutely be taken literally in every detail. Others see it merely as a collection of moral anecdotes. We believe that if people study the Bible as religious history only, the richer inner reality is lost. Those of us willing to look past its literal meaning will discover that it is the story of our own personal evolution in consciousness. It is an allegory of our journey toward enlightenment. It details how we were created with divine potential, how we have misplaced our divine heritage and, most importantly, how we can find it again.

What is Metaphysical Bible Interpretation?

Metaphysical Bible Interpretation means seeing people, places, things, and events that happen ‘out there’ as human qualities, talents, and abilities – as well as faults – within us. It takes Biblical stories and events beyond their literal interpretation by providing more allegorical, esoteric, and metaphorical perspectives to uncover the hidden wisdom and spiritual teachings contained therein. We hope you will find these meta-interpretations meaningful, stimulating, and enlightening.

Does Unity practice baptism and communion?

Yes, symbolically. Whereas religious baptism by water represents the cleansing of our sins, spiritual baptism is an internal process in which we align our human personality with the God presence within us. Spiritual communion takes place through prayer and meditation in the Silence. Universal Substance is symbolized by the bread. The conscious realization of God-life is symbolized by the wine as vital energies of Spirit. Unity practices communion by appropriating, or partaking, of the spiritual energy represented by these elements.

When Will the Judgment Day Come?

Along with heaven and hell, we usually hear the term judgment day. That’s the day we supposedly will all be taken before God, who will render the final judgment as to whether we go “up” or “down.” Is there a judgment day? You bet there is. But it’s not where, what, or when most people think it is. Judgment day takes place each time you set a cause into motion. If you are responsible for some wrong action of any kind, you are “punished” by the deed itself. Your own thoughts, choices and deeds are continually creating consequences (judgments), for or against us. No one escapes the Day of Judgment, because it takes place every time we have a thought or take an action.

What is humankind’s true nature?

Each of us is an individual, eternal expression of God expressing Itself as us in human form. Since our essential nature is divine we are inherently good. Our purpose is to express our divine nature as realized and demonstrated by the Christ as Jesus and other master teachers. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God expresses in, as and through our lives.
